Mito-Nuclear Crosstalk in the Heart

Background

Mitochondria are important players in cellular processes ranging from metabolism to cell fate decisions. Proper mitochondrial turnover and adaptation to metabolic demands are prerequisite conditions for life and require intergenomic coordination between the mitochondrial and nuclear genome. A disturbed mito-nuclear crosstalk i.e. upon oxidative stress under pathophysiological conditions can be responsible for a circulus vitiousus leading to a disproportionate respiratory chain and cell death. In contrast, oxidative stress can also be a stimulatory signal under enhanced physiological demands. We study molecules involved in mito-nuclear interactions like the mitochondrial transcription factor A, the Wnt/Fzd signaling cascade and nitric oxide related proteins to understand molecular mechanisms of cellular adaptation.
