The Max Planck Institute for Heart and Lung Research is cooperatively headed by the four directors Thomas Braun, Stefan Offermanns, Didier Stainier, and Werner Seeger. They carry out the jointly responsibility for the scientific and administrative direction of the institute. Operating acivities are managed by the Managing Director, who is appointed by the board of directors for a particular time. Currently, this position is held by Prof. Dr. Stefan Offermanns.

The board of directors is supported in his statutory tasks by the assistant to the management Dr Matthias Heil and the scientific-administrative coordinator Dr. Susanne Schneider.
